Batik decoration is done by painting the pattern onto the fabric using hot wax. This painting is done by hand so, although always a very similar pattern and colouring, no two duvet covers will ever be precisely the same. After the wax painting, the fabric is placed into a vat of dye – but the colour cannot fix to the waxed areas, which remain mostly undyed. That is how the batik decoration appears. |
The same process is repeated to apply additional colours. After dyeing, the fabric is hot washed and that removes the wax. The fabric is then dried in the sun, and after that a tailor takes over to construct the finished duvet cover. For this duvet cover, all this craftwork is done at a batik-makers' cooperative society near Chennai, south India.

| Because this batik is hand painted and dyed, no two pieces are ever exactly the same. This can mean slight variations to design and colour – such are the special characteristics of authentic hand made batik. |
