Bakbak is the rich dark brown bark of the abaca plant. The bark naturally falls off the plant whilst a new bark grows underneath. Harvested abaca («Manila hemp»), a very strong fibre, is the central trunk of the plant. Until the bright idea to use the bark to weave baskets, bakbak was considered waste. Years ago, One Village encouraged a local social project to develop this basket- making idea so that livelihoods could be developed for the benefit of landless poor. The idea worked, and the resulting cooperative society continues today as a significant service to that community.
